Tonight the line crackles with something other than her voice. A hum, then a clean little tick, like a pencil tapping a tooth. You have heard that sound before, at the back of your mind, when Mr Hollis from the feed store called to report his cows going quiet. You pull the cord, hold the jack steady, and say, "Operator," in the voice your mother taught you for church.

"Are you the one who counts?" says a man's voice, very polite, as if reading from a card. "We need the number of the house with the blue shutters."

You know that house. Everyone does. Your pencil is already moving down the ledger, marking the call in the margin with the tiny outline you drew to keep yourself awake: a round head, two slanted eyes, a shape the girls at school swore was a sign of luck. "There are forty-one houses with blue shutters," you say. "Forty-one," the voice repeats, pleased. "Then we will start with yours." Outside, the window glows a pale green, and you press the red key down with one finger and wait for the line to go dead.
