Small bird on a branch on an ankle

Fine line · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo

A bare foot and ankle rest on white bedding, showing a small tattoo of a songbird perched on a thin branch with a few leaves. The linework is fine and solid black, with minimal shading and no added colour. The tattoo sits near the centre of the frame, with soft natural light and a dark background behind the bed.

Hetty Marrow had been sent out with a surveyor's chain and a clipboard to measure the lane between Aldous Cross and the mill, because the county had decided the old hedges were in the way. The morning was grey with dew, and her pegs were already rusting in the verge before she had driven the first stake.

At the bend by the stile, a songbird sat on a thin ash twig above the ditch, the colour of wet slate, singing as if nobody had ever asked it to move. Every time she lifted the chain, it sang a little louder. The foreman, Dennis Pask, wanted the bend straightened by Friday and said so twice, leaning on his spade as though the spade were the one making the decision.

She tried to be sensible. She drove in a peg, then another, then pulled them both out again and stood with her hands in her coat pockets, watching the twig bounce under the bird's weight. By noon she had drawn a line on the map that curved round the ash like a question mark, and in the margin, in pencil, she wrote: the bird has right of way.

The following spring the road bent at the stile, and drivers slowed there without quite knowing why. A hawthorn had come up through the new verge, and one thin branch leaned out over the tarmac where a small grey bird sang each morning to nobody in particular. Hetty drove past with the window down, and once, she swore afterwards, it sang back.
