Sun and yin yang tattoo on a foot
Fine line · Other · Black and grey · Photo
Two bare feet are crossed in front of a wooden floor, one showing a sun with rays around a yin yang centre. The other foot has a cluster of small five-pointed stars near the ankle. The linework is thin and solid black, with no shading, and the image is shown in warm, slightly yellow tones.

Tomasz had painted the sun on the bow of the Gull Mary every spring for nineteen years, and every spring the paint came off in the first January gales. This year he mixed the ochre himself, the way his father did, with a pinch of linseed and a spoon of salt from the Whitby pans. He worked the rays out in fine strokes, careful as stitching, while the drizzle beaded on the rail and the harbour gulls argued over a split crab.

His daughter Ilse sat on an upturned crate with a cup of tea going cold. She had come home from Leeds with a bag full of other people's opinions and no plans to stay. 'You're painting the sun on a boat,' she said. 'Nobody sees it but the fish.'
'The fish see it,' Tomasz said, and went on working. When he reached the centre he stopped, dipped a brush in black, and made the dark half of a circle, then the light half, curling them together until they held each other's tails. Ilse laughed despite herself. 'That's not a sun. That's two sons arguing.'
He let the brush hang. Out past the piers the cloud broke for a moment and a single silver star showed over the abbey, then went out again. He dabbed six tiny stars around the edge of the circle, quick as sparrows. 'Every day the sun goes down and the dark comes up to take its turn,' he said. 'Your grandfather taught me that. Half of every mark is the other half leaving room.'
Ilse picked up the brush, dipped it, and added a seventh star on the hull where nobody would look until the paint wore away.
