Dotwork mandala on a forearm
Dotwork · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A black and grey tattoo sits on the inner forearm and wrist, showing an ornamental mandala built from fine stippled dots and shaded areas. Small leaf sprigs and a wavy snake-like line run across the design, and a brown leather watch strap sits just above it. A ginger and white tabby cat sleeps across the frame beside the hands, and the soft, warm lighting gives the photo a relaxed feel.

The frost came down on the Tuesday before the lambing, and by Thursday every pane in the back kitchen had grown the same pattern: rings of tiny white dots spreading out from a centre, like a plate someone had tried to draw without lifting the pen. Gran said it was the cold working. She said the cold had nothing else to do in January, so it practised.

Biscuit, the ginger tabby, took no interest in the window. He slept on the warm lid of the range with his legs folded under him and his tail hanging past the rail, twitching only when the wind found the chimney. Dad came in stamping snow from his boots and asked whether the ewe in the top field would make it through the night. I said I'd check. He said that was what I'd said yesterday.
I took the torch out to the top field at dusk. The hedgerow was thick with holly, each leaf edged with ice, and in the ditch by the gate a grass snake lay stiff as a bootlace, either sleeping off the winter or simply dead. I stood there long enough that my breath made its own small clouds. The ewe had a single lamb tucked into the lee of the wall, already dry and wobbling on its legs.
When I got back the kitchen was warm and the frost had melted from the glass in a clean oval, and through it the yard light showed the dots still standing on the wall beyond, patient and exact. Biscuit had moved to the bench beside the sink. Gran had her cup in both palms and was watching him with the look she saves for things that have stayed put. "Well?" she said. "Lamb," I said. "Good," she said, and that was the whole report.
