Small crescent moon on the inner wrist

Fine line · Hand · Black and grey · Photo

A small crescent moon is tattooed on the inner wrist, drawn as a double outline with a thin, even black line and no shading. The moon sits just below the wrist crease and fills a small area, with the hand raised toward the top of the frame. The background shows a wooden floor and a string of warm fairy lights, and the photo is well lit with the tattoo clearly in focus.

Dear Nell,

The fair pulled into Harrowby Green on Tuesday, and Mr Coyle has finally let me paint the sign over the coconut shy. You'll laugh, but I went with a moon. Not the big gold sun they wanted for the rides, just a crescent, outlined twice so it looks like it's been drawn on the sky with a fingertip. Coyle said nobody comes to a coconut shy to look at the heavens. I said they might if the moon was winking at them.

We work nights now because the council wants the lights off by eleven. So after the last customer the whole field goes dark except the generator and the strings of bulbs on the helter-skelter, and I climb the ladder with a tin of black enamel and a brush no thicker than a hair. Frank holds the torch. He keeps saying the moon's a poor choice for a sign that has to be read from the road, and I keep telling him the road can squint.

Last night a boy from the village stood under it for ages with his bike, reading the letters underneath, and then he looked up at the little moon and said it looked like someone had cut a slice off and forgotten where they put it. I thought that was the best review I've had all season.

Write back soon. Tell Mum the caravan's fine and I'm eating properly.

Love, Bea
