Sunflower and ladybird on a thigh
Traditional · Thigh · Colour · Photo
A large sunflower with orange and yellow petals and a dark brown centre sits at the top of a green stem with two leaves. A small red ladybird rests on the left leaf. Black outlines and soft shading give the petals depth, and the bold colours stand out against the pale skin.

The ladybird arrived in the third week of June and took the left-hand leaf as her own. She spent whole afternoons walking the veins, checking each greenfly the way a bailiff checks a ledger, and by evening the leaf was clean. Bessie noticed and grudgingly admitted the ladybird was worth more than the tin of powder she kept under the sink. Mr Oakley said nothing. He only pinched out the side shoots and let the great head bend toward the light.
The storm came the night before the show. By morning the stem lay across the path like a fallen signpost, its bloom split and sagging in the mud. Bessie stood at the gate with her hands on her hips and said that was that. But the ladybird was still on the leaf, unbothered, and when Mr Oakley propped the stalk against a broom handle and tied it with garden twine, the flower lifted its face by degrees toward the east, where the sun was coming up over the cutting.
