Watercolour-style sunflower on a thigh
Botanical · Thigh · Mixed · Photo
A sunflower with orange and yellow petals, a dark brown centre and two green leaves, drawn with thin black outlines and loose sketchy strokes. Soft orange and green washes bleed past the linework, giving a watercolour effect. The design sits on the outer thigh and is centred in the frame against plain skin.

The seed packet came in the carter's sack with the lamp oil, and I nearly threw it on the midden, but Abbot Hilary had the kitchen plot dug by Lauds, so I pressed a few seeds into the warm earth beside the south wall. Three have come up. They are not the drab yellow your mother grew at Ludlow but a burnt orange that fades to honey at the rims, as if someone washed the colour on with a wet brush and let it run.

They turn their faces to the sun all day, which the novices find uncanny. I told them they are only doing what we do at the offices, facing the light and waiting for it to come round. Brother Oswin has taken to sketching them on the spare leaves of his psalter, black ink for the petals, quick and impatient, then smearing crushed nettle green across the stems with his thumb. The drawings are better than the flowers, though he would never say so.
Yesterday the tallest head bowed right down to the wall, and its centre, dark as wet soil, began to drop seed onto the path. Hilary said we should cut it for the refectory table. I asked for one more week. Oswin wanted the seeds for the next sowing, and I found myself arguing that a thing which has spent its whole life turning toward the light ought to be allowed to finish the turn.
Come in June if the roads allow. Bring your heavy cloak, because the cloister is cold, but walk the south garden at evening and you will see them lean together in a row like a congregation at the close of compline. Tell Father I have kept the packet. Your brother, Thomas.
