Sunflower and purple flowers on a shoulder
Botanical · Shoulder · Colour · Photo
A person is seen from behind with dark hair falling forward, showing a large colour tattoo on the shoulder and upper back. The design shows a yellow sunflower with a dark brown centre, green leaves and curling stems, and purple flowers at the top. The bold outlines and smooth colour fills sit against a background of green foliage and a stone wall.

The flock would not cross the Harrow Gap until the sun had cleared the eastern shoulder, so every morning Marit sat on the cairn with her crook across her knees and waited. Below her the sunflowers stood in ragged rows along the terrace, big as shields, and as the light came up over the rocks they swung their heads round one after another, slow as a sleeper turning over, until every face was pointed at her.

Her grandmother had said the stems curled at the foot because the first flower had wound itself round the roots of a blue larkspur to keep it from the wind. The larkspur was the mountain's own flower and had no leaves to spare, so the sunflower gave it two of its own, broad and green, and was never quite the same after. Marit thought this was foolishness until the autumn the snow came early and the larkspur was the only thing still standing on the high slope, leaning purple against the grey stone.
She went up with a sack and a knife in the first frost and cut the dried heads, shaking the seed into her apron. The sheep came through the Gap that winter with no one lost, and in spring she scattered the seed in the lower meadow, where a few stems curled up out of the soil with their leaves folded like hands.
When people asked why she planted sunflowers on a mountain, Marit only pointed at the cairn, where the gold and the blue stood side by side, and said somebody had to keep an eye on the sun.
