Shaded sunflowers on a shoulder

Realism · Shoulder · Black and grey · Photo

A tattoo of two sunflowers, one large in the foreground and a smaller one fading behind it, with dark leaves at the lower left. The petals and centres are shaded with soft grey gradients and fine detail, giving a realistic look. The ink is almost entirely black and grey, with the smaller flower's edges softened into warm skin tones, and the design sits across the top of the shoulder.

Mind the step, it's loose, Dora always said so and she was right about most things. You'll want to look at the big one first, the one that sulks in the front. Six foot two it grew this year, taller than me by a hand, and every morning it turns its face round to the kitchen window the way a dog turns to the door. That's the sun it wants, though there's no sun in a window at half six. It's only habit, same as mine.

The smaller one behind it is the one Dora grew from the packet we bought off the lad at Hessle market the spring the lorry broke down. She said it had the better heart. It never had the height. It leans against the fence post where the light comes in sideways over the Pearsons' wall, and in the August she went, it turned its whole head away from the big one and stayed turned for a fortnight. I thought it had given up. I stood here with the watering can and said, go on then, face the other way if you must.

Then one dinnertime I saw what it was doing. The shadow of the big head had covered it all summer, and the back of the bed had gone dim and grey. It was chasing the only gap of light left in the yard, sliding round the edge of the shed as if it had a plan. I suppose everything in a garden does, if you wait long enough to watch.

So I moved the fence panel. Three inches. Dora would have laughed at me, a grown man with a claw hammer at the bottom of his garden. Next morning the little one had its face up, bold as brass, and the big one was still looking at the window, bless it.
