Two sunflowers on the upper chest

Neo-trad · Chest · Colour · Photo

The tattoo shows two sunflowers with yellow-orange petals, brown centres and dark green leaves, arranged diagonally from the collarbone towards the shoulder. The bold black outlines and smooth shading on the petals give the design a neo-traditional look. The photograph is taken indoors against a wall of tattoo flash, with the rest of the body and a light vest top partly visible.

You take the last stall at the end of Harrow Lane because nobody else wants the corner where the drain backs up. The rain has been coming sideways since six, and by eight the awning is sagging under it like a wet hat. Your nan's old enamel bucket sits under the drip, filling slowly with the sound of a clock nobody winds. The fruit man two pitches down has already packed his crates and left you a look of pity you choose to ignore.

A girl comes running up the lane with a carrier bag over her head, shoulders hunched, and she stops at your stall because it is the only one still lit. She wants sunflowers. Not cut ones, she says, they wilt by Tuesday, she wants them to stay. You tell her you have none in season, only a jar of dried heads from August that you keep for the sparrows. She looks at the jar for a long moment and then puts her wet hand flat on the counter next to it, as if she could feel the heat still stored in the petals.

So you do what your grandmother did for people who came in soaked and wanting something they could not carry home. You fetch the sketchbook from under the till, the one with the brown cardboard cover, and you draw two heads turned toward a light nobody else can see, the petals ruled in bold black so the rain cannot smudge them. The leaves go in dark green, heavy with water. When you turn the page round she is smiling, and the bucket under the awning has finally stopped dripping.
