Realistic coloured sunflower tattoo with a shaded brown centre on the upper shoulder of a woman in a black off-shoulder top.

Sunflower tattoo on the shoulder

Realism · Shoulder · Colour · Photo

A large sunflower with layered, shaded petals in yellow, orange and brown radiates from a dark, textured centre. The shading gives the petals depth and the centre a dimpled, seed-head effect. The flower sits on the top of the shoulder, with the subject's hair and a black top framing it against a pale, softly lit background.

Dear Marion, the heads came up heavy this year, and Dad has stopped pretending he doesn't care which way they face. Every morning he walks the top rows of the field below the chapel with his cap in his hands, checking they've all turned east. He says they follow the sun across the sky all day and then swing back in the dark, ready for the next one. I told him that's just what plants do, and he said that's what everyone says about people.

The seed heads are dark now, dimpled like the bottom of a thimble, and the finches have been at the edges since Tuesday. Mrs Okafor from the post office asked if we'd sell her a bucket for her hens, and I said yes before Dad could argue. You'll remember the summer we ran through those rows with the dog, shrieking, and the stalks snapped like kindling under us. Nobody has run through them since.

Yesterday I cut the tallest one for the kitchen windowsill, and it dropped petals on the lino in a gold scatter. Dad picked one up, turned it over in the light, and said it looked like it was still deciding whether to stay. He pressed a petal into the back of the almanac, under August. I found it this morning, brittle as a biscuit, and I'm folding it into this letter so you'll know the field is still doing its best without us.
