Sunflower tattoo on a forearm
Botanical · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A sunflower with layered, shaded petals and a rounded centre sits on the forearm of a person sitting outdoors. The linework is dark and defined, and grey shading gives the petals depth and a soft gradient toward the centre. The background shows grass, a house and trees in daylight, and the shirt has a printed sun graphic.

Pull that stool nearer the grate, and mind the draught, it only comes under the door when the wind sits in the north. My grandfather's top field ran down to the beck, and the winter the snow came early, the sunflowers were still standing there, unpicked, their great black heads bowed under the white like mourners who had lost their nerve. Everyone said to cut them and be done. Grandad said no, and he went out every morning in his big coat to look at them.

Frost got into the petals and turned them to silver, then to a grey so fine you could see the veins of it when the light came flat across the field. Each morning the heads had turned a little, though nobody had the nerve to say so aloud. A sunflower follows the sun across the sky all summer, and when the sun has gone for the year, it still bends to where it last saw it, low over the hedge. He told me that was the only loyalty worth having, the kind that outlasts the warmth.
Then Nell Harker came up the lane with her father's cart, nine years old and sharp as a tack, and asked if she could have the seed heads for the birds. Grandad gave her a sack and a look that said he had known all along. She rubbed the seeds out between her palms all that long week, and when the thaw came in March she planted them in the same black rows, pressing each one in with her thumb.
The field came up yellow as a new yolk by July. Nell kept one head for herself, pressed flat between the pages of the hymn book, and it hangs on my kitchen wall still, grey as ash, turned toward the window.
