Sunflower tattoo on a shoulder

Botanical · Shoulder · Black and grey · Photo

A sunflower with outlined petals and a stippled, shaded centre is tattooed on the top of the shoulder, close to the collarbone. The linework is fine and the shading is soft grey with no colour, and the flower sits centrally in the frame against pale, blurred walls. The woman's face is not shown, only her ear, neck and hair.

Sit close, the fire's nearly out and I'll not say it twice. You want to know how the Halloran Brothers' Travelling Show went under? Hush now, I'm coming to the flowers. The flowers are the whole of it.

By the third winter the canvas was patched with feed sacks and the high wire had rusted to the colour of old pennies. The elephant had gone to a farmer in Norfolk who paid in cash and a cold ham. Only Marguerite still rode the grey mare each night, standing on her bare feet while the ring lamps guttered, and at the end of every act she turned her face toward the lamps as if they were the sun and she'd been told to wait for it.

Young Tam Ferris sold programmes from a tray hung round his neck. One evening he came in from a field outside Ely with a paper twist of seeds he'd been given by a widow on her allotment, and he pushed them into the sawdust beside the mare's stall because he had nowhere else to put them. They grew taller than the tent pole. Through the day they followed the sun across the sky, and by night they'd swung round to the canvas glow, so that when the show shut down in the spring they stood in a row over the empty ground, every face pointed at a tent with nobody left in it.

They pulled the poles for scrap in April. Tam came back in September with his coat pockets full, and he walked the field knocking seed heads into a tobacco tin. He's a grandfather now and keeps a sunflower on his windowsill, which he says is only good manners. Stand in the right place at dusk and you'll see them still, turned toward the spot you've just come from.
