Sunflower tattoo on a shoulder
Botanical · Shoulder · Black and grey · Photo
A single sunflower is drawn in black ink on the upper shoulder, with the head angled toward the collarbone. The petals use fine outlines with soft grey shading, and the centre is stippled to add texture. The photograph is cropped to the shoulder and neck against a plain pale wall, with a warm, faded tone.

Mrs Trevithick charged a shilling extra for the use of the back parlour, and Iris paid it every Thursday without a word, counting the coins onto the oilcloth as if they were buttons she meant to sew back on later. The parlour looked over the kitchen garden, where sunflowers had been planted against the wall in a row, taller than the gutter, bending their great heads toward the harbour each morning as though someone had called them.

She had come in September to finish a set of drawings for a seed merchant in Bristol, who wanted the plants done in pencil, each head exact, each petal counted. Most mornings she sat at the window with a cup of tea gone cold, shading the dark centre with tiny dots, because the merchant had complained that a flat centre looked like a plate. Dots took hours. Dots gave her something to do with her hands while the gulls argued on the roof.
The landlady's grandson, Danny, a boy of nine with a cough and a torn cap, brought her the spent heads each week, cut and wrapped in newspaper, and asked what they were for. She told him they were for remembering which way the light had been. He didn't believe her, but he kept bringing them.
On the last Thursday she left the drawings on the table with the shilling beneath them and walked down to the harbour. Behind her, in the garden, the nearest sunflower had already swung round from the water toward the empty window, the way they do at evening, following a sun that had gone.
