Sunflower tattoo on the shoulder

Botanical · Shoulder · Colour · Photo

A large sunflower fills the upper arm and shoulder of a person whose face is cropped out of the frame, with long blonde hair falling over one side. The petals are outlined and filled in orange and yellow with soft shading, and the centre is rendered in grey with stippled texture. The flower sits centrally in the frame against pale skin, with a dark strap visible behind it.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The last sunflower in the field behind Hallam's yard had gone to seed by the time the wagons were winched onto the low-loader, and Mags Thorpe stood on the bank with a paper bag, pulling the heads off one by one. Nobody had asked her to. The show was folding after Hull, and the lorries were already loud with men shouting about tent pegs and the price of diesel.

Inside the big top, what was left of the ring lay under a tarpaulin. Three horses had gone to a farm near Beverley. Dougie, the clown, who had painted that sunflower in orange and yellow across the side of the ticket wagon the summer she turned nine, sat on a crate with his greasepaint half off and rolled a cigarette he never lit. He said the crowds had stopped coming when the council stopped letting them park on the rec. He said it the way other people talk about the weather.

Mags understood the seed heads better than she understood him. Each centre was a grey knot of tiny pips, packed close as a crowd, every one of them waiting for the same thing. Her mum used to say you could count them if you were patient, and that the number was never the same twice.

She knelt at the edge of the empty field and pushed the heads into the soft ground with her thumbs, one after another, until the bag was flat. Then she stood, wiped her hands on her jeans, and walked back towards the lorries, leaving the field to do whatever it would do in spring.
