Yellow sunflower on a shoulder
Botanical · Shoulder · Colour · Photo
A large sunflower with bright yellow petals radiates from a dark brown centre, with the petals shaded and layered to give depth. Soft teal shading fades out around the outer edge of the petals, which sit across the shoulder blade. The photograph is taken from behind, showing the back and shoulder of a person with dark hair, with a dim background.

You want to know about the sunflowers, then you'll have to sit where I can see your face, because I'll not tell it to the back of a head. Right. My brother Tomas grew them along the cliff path below the Hythe light, the big gold ones that turn their faces after the sun all day like they're hoping to be noticed. Nobody on this coast had any business growing anything that wanted that much light. The salt took half of them every March and he planted again every April regardless.

The spring the lamp was automated, the Trinity men came up with their clipboards and told us we'd no further use, and Tomas went down to the cliff with a spade and dug out the biggest head he had. He carried it up the lighthouse steps in a bucket of seawater, all thirty of those steps, and he set it on the sill of the lantern room where the glass catches the morning. He said, if the light's going to be run by a machine, the least it can do is have something to look at that isn't a machine.
It didn't last the week. The petals went brown at the rims and the head bowed right over, the way they do when they've finished. But the seeds had set, and that autumn he scattered them down the path where the wind would carry them. I still walk that path. Every July the whole cliff goes gold for a fortnight, and I stand at the rail and I think, there, Tomas, you were right about the light.
