Sunflower with a 'no place like home' quote

Botanical · Other · Colour · Photo

A sunflower with yellow petals and a textured grey-green centre sits at the middle of the image, outlined in fine dark linework. Curved script above the flower reads 'there's no place like home'. The colour is applied in soft yellow shading with the petals drawn individually, set against pale skin.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The rain had been coming sideways off the river since seven, and by eleven Nell Haddow had sold nothing but a bag of onion sets and a lecture about onion sets. Her trestle stood under the tin awning of the Thursday market, and behind it sat a bucket of cut sunflowers she had bought wholesale and could not shift. Their heads hung over the rim, dripping, as if they were listening to the weather and didn't think much of it.

A man in a yellow waterproof stopped at the chalk board, read the word SEEDS twice, and said his mother had grown these up the side of the coal bunker every summer of his childhood. He didn't want a bloom. He wanted a packet. Nell told him the packets were gone, so she counted out nineteen seeds from the tin under her table into a paper twist, the black ones with the pale stripe, and he paid her in coins that had been in his pocket so long they were warm.

After he left she tipped the bucket against the back wall and found, under a skin of wet paper, one head that had let its petals go and gone grey and round, like a cheese left out. She rubbed it between her palms and the seeds came loose in a neat spiral, each one packed tight against its neighbour as if nothing in the world had ever asked them to move.

She pushed the leftover seeds into the damp soil of the window box she kept for the stall's few herbs, pressed them down with one finger, and wrote on the back of the chalk board in capitals she would later have to wipe off: COME BACK IN AUGUST. Then she turned the lamp off and walked the long way home through the rain, past the bunkers, with the empty bucket swinging from one hand.
