Colour tattoo of a yellow sunflower with a white flower of life pattern at its centre, on the ribs, in a botanical and geometric style.

Sunflower with flower of life on the ribs

Botanical · Ribs · Colour · Photo

A large sunflower with layered yellow and orange petals fills the frame, its dark outlines and gradual shading giving the petals depth. The centre holds a white flower of life pattern of overlapping circles, with a pale yellow glow behind it. The tattoo sits on the side of the torso against soft, blurred fabric and a warm background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Every spring the keeper's wife on Gannet Rock sowed her seeds in old paraffin tins, because the wind off the sea stripped anything taller than a thumb. Her name was Marred. She did not hold with the tales the fishermen told about the light, that the first keeper had cut out his own tongue so he could never sing the boats onto the rocks. Sunflowers were what she had, and she kept them.

The summer the lamp began to fail, the oil ran thin and the wick would not hold its flame. Her husband sat in the lantern room with his head in his hands while the sea grew dark below. Marred walked out along the causeway at low tide with a basket and a knife, and she cut the heaviest heads from the stalks. She carried them up the iron stairs and set them round the lens, faces turned toward the mainland, so they followed the sun all day the way a crowd follows a bell.

That night she pressed the seeds in the stone mortar her mother had left her, and the oil ran gold into the lamp. It burned clean. Through the glass the light broke into rings, one inside another, and the rings lay on the water like a flower opening. The boats came in by it, one after another, until the last of them was tied to the iron ring at the quay.

Marred kept a single bloom back every autumn after that, and the keepers who came after her never once let the lamp go out.
