Sunflower tattoo on a shoulder

Botanical · Shoulder · Colour · Photo

A large sunflower is tattooed on the upper back near the shoulder, with the head of the bloom shown at the centre and the petals fanning out around it. The petals have soft yellow, orange and red shading with fine linework, and the central disc is rendered in brown and near-black dots. The photo is taken from behind and shows only the shoulder and back of the head, with the tattoo as the main subject.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The seed tin had come over on the Tuesday boat, wrapped in a tea towel, and by Thursday I had counted the seeds three times, which Nan would have called vanity. Sunflowers do not grow well on Scarra. The wind comes in off the Atlantic flat and hard and snaps anything taller than a man's knee, so every summer she planted them anyway, in the lee of the stone wall behind the chapel, where the soil was thin and black and smelled of kelp.

My father never believed in them. He said a flower that turned its face to the sun all day had no opinions of its own, and he said it kindly, the way he said most things about her after the funeral. I planted the seeds in May anyway, pressing each one an inch into the wet ground with my thumb, and I watered them from the rain butt when the sky refused to. By August the stalks had reached my shoulder and bent under their own heavy heads, and I stopped expecting anything of them.

Then one morning the largest bloom had lifted itself clear of the wall, a broad disc of gold with a brown heart the colour of peat, and the whole row had turned to face the water. My father came up the path on his stick, slower than the tide, and stood looking at it for a long time without saying anything. Eventually he lowered himself onto the upturned fish box by the gate. "She used to say they turn back in the night," he said. "Face east again, to wait for the morning." We sat there until the kettle boiled dry in the kitchen, watching the petals catch the last of the light.
