Black ink drawing of flowers and leaves inside a triangle on white paper, in a fine line botanical style, beside a black fineliner pen.

Floral triangle ink drawing

Botanical · Black and grey · Flash

A pen drawing of several large blossoms and leaves arranged inside an equilateral triangle, with some petals reaching the edges of the shape. The work uses fine black linework with hatched and stippled shading on the petals and leaves, and the centres have dense dot detail. It is rendered entirely in black ink on white paper, with a black pen lying across the top of the sheet.

The nursery van was late, so Ruth sat on the tailgate of the pickup with a sketchbook on her knees and waited for the light to change. Her father had cut the last of the peonies from the north bed that morning and left them in a bucket by the back step, heads bowed, the petals already loosening like the buttons on an old coat. She had never learned to draw anything that did not hold still, so she drew those. Ink first, then the fine lines, then the dots in the centres where the pollen would be if the flowers were honest.

The triangle was her idea and her mother's complaint. Her mother said a page should be a page, not a shape you cut out with scissors and a grudge. But Ruth liked the way the three corners pushed against the blossoms, how the petals had to stop short of the edges or spill out past them, and she let a few spill. One bloom at the top kept reaching for the corner as if it meant to leave.

When the van finally came up the lane, the driver leaned out and asked what she was making. She turned the book round so he could see. He looked for a long time, longer than a man in a hurry should, then said his sister had a bit of ground near Hereford where the peonies came back every spring whether anyone wanted them or not.

Ruth tore the page out, folded it into thirds and tucked it into his glovebox. Her father would want the bucket back by dark, and the bush by the wall would bloom again next June with or without a drawing, which she found she could bear.
