Sunset beach scene and hibiscus on an upper arm
Realism · Upper arm · Colour · Photo
The tattoo covers the upper arm and shoulder with a sunset beach scene, showing palm trees silhouetted against orange and purple clouds, a setting sun, rolling blue waves and two surfboards on sand. Pink hibiscus flowers with green leaves and dark swirling linework sit on the lower right of the arm. The shading is smooth and realistic, with bright colour across the sky and sea and soft gradients in the clouds, and the two photographs show the same sleeve from different angles.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction
Nobody in Pell Bay trusted the last set of the day, so Ruth Amory left her boards standing in the sand each evening, fins down, the way her father had taught her, so the tide could find them if it wanted them back.

That June the red board went out with Tomas Reyes lying on it, a boy from the rental hut who had never once caught a wave cleanly. He paddled past the reef while the sun dropped into a bruise of orange and purple cloud, and the palms along the road clattered like someone shaking out a sheet. Ruth stood at the tideline holding a bunch of hibiscus she had picked from the chapel wall, the stems wrapped in wet newspaper, meaning to hand them over when he came in grinning.
The swell stacked up blue and glassy and curled over with a sound like a door slamming. She counted. Eleven. Twelve. On thirteen the water went smooth and grey, and there was only the board, upside down and turning slowly in the shallows where the foam ran out. Ruth waded in to her knees. Her hands were full of flowers and she did not think to put them down.
Tomas came up the beach an hour later with a graze on his shin and a story about a turtle that had shouldered him off the wave. He took one look at her face, then at the hibiscus dripping onto the sand. She told him the flowers were for the sea, and tipped them in one bloom at a time, and watched the pink go under the blue until the last of the orange had gone out of the sky.
