Mountain lake landscape on a limb

Realism · Other · Colour · Photo

The tattoo depicts a mountain peak rising above a calm lake, with conifers along the shoreline, a tall tree with orange foliage on the left, and a sky that fades from blue cloud to warm orange sunset. The shading is soft and painterly, with smooth blends and highlights on the rock face and water. Two side-by-side photographs show the piece from different angles, with the design filling most of the frame.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Old Teodor had painted the same mountain for thirty years, and the lord of Varnholt still sent every canvas back. Too grey, he said. Too cold. Show me the mountain at the hour it takes fire.

So Teodor climbed. He took three brushes, a jar of linseed oil and a heel of black bread, and walked the shore road until the peak the valley called Sister Stone stood over the water like a woman with her hands in her lap. He set his easel on a shelf of grey rock where the pines grew thin and crooked, and he waited for evening.

The light came slowly. First the cloud above the peak went blue, then the blue softened and bled into copper, and the lake below caught every colour the sky had spilled. Teodor worked wet into wet, pressing a bright ochre into the rock where the sun struck it. A boy from the village came up the path with a goat and stopped to watch, and asked why the water had two skies in it. Teodor said that was the trick of a good lake.

When the lord's men came for the painting at dusk, Teodor was asleep against a pine with the brush still in his fist. They carried the canvas down the hill. The lord hung it facing his bed, and each night he looked at it before sleep and dreamed of a country where nothing was asked of him twice. Teodor never saw him again, but the boy kept the goat and the path, and when he was old he told the children that the sunset in that painting was still there, if you climbed high enough before the light went.
