Lighthouse at sunset on a calf

Realism · Other · Colour · Photo

A lighthouse stands on a rocky outcrop, with white surf breaking over dark rocks in the foreground and two birds flying over the sea. The sky shifts from teal and blue at the top to fiery orange and red near the horizon, with soft cloud bands and a glowing light at the top of the tower. The shading is smooth and painterly, with strong colour contrast and a wide composition that wraps around the calf.

Her father had kept the light on Carrick Rock for thirty-one years, rowing out every third week with paraffin, tinned peaches and the post. Maud packed the last crate and found a gull on the scales, eyeing her with one yellow eye. She tossed it a herring head and it took the thing without a word of thanks.

Out past the breakwater the beam swept round, and she began counting its turns the way her father used to, one, two, three, until the lamp caught the wet cobbles and threw her shadow the length of the quay. Somebody out there was still watching it, she thought, so she lifted a hand to the light as though it could see her.
