Superman shield charm anklet

Ankle · Black and grey · Photo

The tattoo shows a thin band wrapping around the ankle with a small ring and a diamond-shaped charm hanging from it. The charm contains a stylised shield with an S-like emblem drawn in outline. The linework is solid black with no shading, and the design sits in the centre of the frame against a plain skin background with a patterned orange cloth behind.

The band struck up the quickstep before you had finished fastening the strap, and Eddie was already on his feet at the edge of the parquet, hand out, grinning as though the whole evening had been arranged for his benefit. You shook your head and stood anyway. The Majestic smelled of Brylcreem, spilt lemonade and wet wool, and the ceiling fans turned slowly above couples who knew their steps.

The charm had cost him threepence from a tray at the pier stall, a little tin diamond with a shield stamped into it and an S that looked as though it had been drawn in a hurry. "Stops bullets," he'd said, hooking it onto the thin band he'd bought for you. "Stops everything." You told him Superman was for boys with comics under their mattresses, and he said he had two under his mattress, thank you very much, and went red to the ears.

Halfway through the foxtrot the ring caught on the hem of your skirt. For a moment you stood still while the room turned around you, and Eddie didn't tease. He knelt on the boards and worked it free with fingers that shook. When he stood, he asked if you would keep the charm while he was away on the Hull course, so that something of his could look after you on the trains.

You kept it. The band has gone grey now and the shield has worn smooth where your thumb rubbed it. Sometimes, dancing alone in the kitchen with the wireless turned low, you feel it knock against you, and it only goes quiet when you stop.
