Superwoman lettering on upper back
Lettering · Back · Black and grey · Photo
The photograph shows the word Superwoman written in a loose, hand-drawn script across the upper back, with the head and shoulder of the wearer partly visible at the top of the frame. The strokes appear fairly even in weight and are rendered in solid dark ink with soft edges on the skin. The image is monochrome, and the framing is close, with a bra strap visible at the lower right.

The felt pen had dried out twice by the time Irene reached the final n, so she shook it hard against her palm and pressed on. Her sister sat on the back step of the terrace with a blouse folded over the rail, and the lane outside smelt of wet slate and somebody's Sunday dinner. Up at the colliery the winding wheel was still for once, which everyone in Hetton agreed was a bad sign.

"It's daft," Pat said, not turning round. "Write that on a lass and she'll only be wanting a cape."
"Then you'll need one," Irene said. "Marjorie at the Co-op has a roll of brown paper she'll never miss." She capped the pen and blew across the letters the way their mam used to dry the icing on a fairy cake. Tommy had been on nights since the talk of a strike started, and the pair of them had argued about nothing else since Easter, so this was the first thing that had made Pat laugh in a month.
By the time the bus came to take Pat to the laundry at the infirmary, the ink had gone soft at the edges and the word looked like it had been written in a hurry by someone very brave. Irene walked her to the stop with a bag of corned beef sandwiches and watched her sister settle the cardigan over her shoulders as if the word were a coat she could button up or leave on the hook.
Pat didn't look back from the step of the bus. Irene stayed by the shelter, where someone had scratched a name into the glass, until the bus was a yellow dot on the road to Sunderland. Her palm was still grey from the pen, and she kept it closed all the way home.
