Dear Marek,

The swallows came back to the signal box on Tuesday, two of them, and went straight for the old nest under the gutter as if the last eleven months had been a rumour. I told Mrs Oduya that was a sign. She said swallows are only swallows, and that you would have said the same thing with more swearing.

Your letter arrived with the ink smudged where the customs man in Hradek had pressed his thumb on it. Good. Let them read what they like. I have pinned the postcard above the kettle, the painted heart with the cream banner that says LOVE in letters you could read from the platform. You always said a swallow flies home whatever the weather. I thought it was nonsense until the first warm morning, when one darted over the river to the far bank and back, twice, sure of its road.

So come home by the spring fair, or by lorry if the bridge is shut again. Bring the tin of the good tobacco and do not tell me the guards were gentle. I will meet the train with the bird on the postcard in my coat pocket, so you know which platform is mine.

Yours, Ada
