Swallow tattoo on a finger

Fine line · Hand · Black and grey · Photo

A small swallow in flight is outlined in dark ink on the side of a finger. The linework is thin and even, with no shading, and the bird's wings are spread upward toward the knuckle. The hand rests on a red surface, and the nails show white tips with a teal edge.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Every spring the Harrow and Lamb fair came up the coast road with its painted horses and its one lame camel, and every spring a swallow came with it, low over the caravans, never once settling on a roof. The showman's daughter, Nell Pardoe, said it was the same bird each year, and that it had been caught in a ring-toss pole the autumn her mother died, and had been cut free by a boy from the ferry town.

Nobody believed her, but nobody argued either, because the swallow seemed to bring fine weather to the dodgems, and once turned a wet Saturday into a full tent. Tobias Crane, who ran the shooting gallery and had never once hit the tin ducks he painted, said a swallow that followed a fair was only counting the fields it would not have to cross alone.

One October the fair stopped in a meadow past Wickham, and the wind came off the sea so hard the big wheel groaned on its axle. Nell walked out to the hedge at dusk with a tin of crumbs and found the bird on a fence post, feathers flat, one wing held wrong. She held out her hand, palm down, the way her mother had taught her with the horses, and the swallow stepped onto her finger as though it had been asked.

She carried it back to the wagon in her cupped fist and kept it through the storm in a shoebox lined with flannel. By morning the box was empty except for one dark feather, and Nell pressed it flat in her ledger, then wrote beside it the name of the next town on the route.
