Vine and rose ring finger tattoos
Botanical · Hand · Black and grey · Photo
Two interlaced hands show matching thin vine tattoos wrapping around the ring fingers. The left finger has a small rose with a pinkish tint at its centre, while the right finger carries only the vine band. The linework is dark and outlined with soft grey shading, set against a pale, plain background.

Her brother Joe worked the face for the company and had a habit of twisting bramble wire into things while he waited for the cage: a horseshoe, a wren, a hoop small enough for a little finger. In March he brought her one he'd wrapped with a sprig of thorn and said the lamp men had laughed at him for it. 'It's a vine,' he said. 'Don't take it as soppy.'
She didn't. She carried it to the gate and tried it on her own hand, then on the rose, which had dropped its petals onto the step. The thorns caught her cuff and held it. Joe's wife Mary came out with the baby and watched without saying anything, the way the whole street watched anything that wasn't coal.
When the cage stopped that night with its bell still ringing and nobody came up for an hour, Nell sat on the step with the wire in her lap. Joe walked up the lane at first light, black to the eyes, and held out his hand for the hoop. She gave it back. He wound it round her finger where it sat loose and scratched, and said that was the only kind of ring a Ridley was allowed.
