Small hamsa hand with eye on foot

Dotwork · Other · Black and grey · Photo

A small hamsa hand, with scrolled patterns on the fingers and a single eye in the palm, is tattooed on the side of a foot. The outline is drawn in black with fine, even linework, and dots run along the lower edge of the palm. The tattoo is solid black with no colour, and it sits in the centre of a light-skinned foot with a coin placed to the upper right.

Her uncle had hung it there the winter the fish market flooded. He said the eye did not guard the shop so much as look back at whoever came in meaning harm, and that a thief hated being seen more than being caught. She had laughed at him then. Tonight the lamp over the door buzzed and flickered, and out in the street a man in a grey coat was walking slowly past the window for the third time, pausing each time to peer through the glass at the empty stool.

She did not reach for the telephone. She took the brass hand down, held it up to the lamp, and turned it so the eye caught the light. The man stopped. He looked at the charm, then at her, and something in his face loosened. He tipped his hat, walked on towards the river, and she heard his footsteps fade over the wet cobbles.

In the morning the missing coin turned up wedged beneath the drawer runner, bright as a fresh minted thing. Marisol dropped it in the tin, hung the brass hand back on its hook, and decided she would count the takings once from now on and trust the eye with the rest.
