Swallow with rose fill on a shoulder

Traditional · Shoulder · Mixed · Photo

A swallow in flight is filled with an orange and red rose with green leaves, set against a dark ink body. The bold black outlines and solid shading give the bird a flat, graphic finish. The design is centred on the upper back near the shoulder, with the wings extending diagonally across the frame.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Brother Edric taught me to graft roses the spring I came to the house at Holm Ferry, when I still held my knife like a pen. He said a rose wants to be talked into a new branch, not forced, and that the swallows knew more about patience than either of us. They came back to the infirmary cloister every April, cutting through the air above the herb beds as if they had been sent with a message nobody had bothered to read.

We kept an old red climbing rose on the south wall, one nobody could name, and each year its blooms opened the same week the first pair of swallows began mending their nest in the eaves above it. Edric counted the nests the way the cellarer counted barrels. Eleven years, eleven nests, each one patched with mud and straw where the frost had loosened the mortar.

The winter Edric died, I pruned the rose alone, cutting hard as he had shown me, and wept into the secateurs where nobody could hear. In April the swallows came back, circled the empty cloister twice and went straight to the eaves. Later a single feather came down into the bed, blue-black with a rust-coloured edge, and I pressed it into my psalter at the page we sing for the dead.
