Realistic rose tattoo on a shoulder blade
Realism · Shoulder · Colour · Photo
A large, softly shaded rose with pale pink and cream petals sits on the upper back, partly over the shoulder blade. Dark green leaves frame the bloom, with smooth gradients that give the petals depth and a three-dimensional look. The view is from behind the subject, with her dark hair at the top left and a black top at the bottom of the frame.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction
Tomas had been mending the same rose on the big top's left flap since March, and the paint kept lifting in the damp. Mrs Okonedo, who ran the wardrobe, said the company could not afford new canvas, so the rose would have to be coaxed back to life. He worked from an orange crate with a sable brush and a jar of cream lake, while the last of the afternoon light came sideways through the rigging and laid itself across the sawdust.

The rose had been painted by someone who knew roses. Each petal was dragged thin at the edge, pink bleeding into cream, with shadow pooled in the folds the way it pools on a bloom left out overnight. The leaves were a deep, almost black green, and Tomas had learned that the trick was never to hurry the blend. The company was closing in Sheffield once the bank took the winter quarters, and Declan Vosse, the ringmaster, had stopped coming to rehearsals and sat in his caravan with the curtains shut.
On the final night, a girl from the town wandered backstage with a leaflet asking whether anyone wanted their fortune read. Tomas pointed up at the flap instead. She asked who had painted it. He said his grandfather had, back when the tent still smelled of elephants and hot sugar, and that the rose was the only thing left in the place that still did what it promised.
At dawn he rolled the flap for the lorry, the paint dry and faintly luminous in the grey light. He left the crate standing in the empty field, where the first frost would reach the leaves before anything else.
