Swallow with STEADFAST banner on a thigh
Traditional · Thigh · Mixed · Photo
A black and red swallow in flight holds a ribbon banner in its beak, with the word STEADFAST in black capitals on a light band. The swallow is outlined in bold black linework with solid black areas on the wings and body, and a soft red wash sits behind it. The close crop shows the tattoo filling most of the frame against a dark fabric edge at the top.

Dad always said a swallow comes back to the same barn every spring, and that was the only kind of loyalty worth paying for. I was sixteen the August the Pell and Sons fair pulled into the field behind the Rose and Crown at Cottenham, and I had already decided I would be somewhere else by Christmas. I told him over the candyfloss machine. He wiped his hands down his trousers and pointed at the ghost train, where the rain had lifted the paint off the skeleton's ribs.

Steadfast, he said, was a word a tattooist in Hull had sold him for a sovereign and a bottle of rum. Stay put when the weather turns. I thought it sounded like something you'd say to a carthorse. So I sulked through the Lincoln and Peterborough pitches, mended the lights on the Waltzer with a borrowed soldering iron, and counted the days on the back of a ticket roll.
The last night of the season the sun went down red over the dodgems, and a single swallow came low across the field, cutting figures of eight above the empty stalls. It did not head south. It hung over the ghost train for a long while, then dropped into the gap where the old roof had split. Dad saw me watching and said nothing, which for him was a speech.
I unpacked my bag in the morning. The bus to Ely left without me, and by spring I had my own pitch, my name painted on the side of a caravan, and a bird that came back every year to show me I was not the only one who had decided to stay.
