Swallows in flight on a foot
Fine line · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo
Several small swallows in flight travel up the outer side of the foot towards the ankle. The linework is thin and mostly uniform, with light grey shading giving the birds a soft, sketched look. The bare foot fills most of the frame against a wooden surface, and the tattoo sits in the lower part of the composition.

The swallows got into the marquee before the speeches, three of them, skimming under the canvas as if they had booked a table. My brother Dennis flapped a tea towel at them and only made them climb higher, and Auntie Mo declared they were guests like everyone else and ought to be fed.

My job was the rings. I had kept them in the inside pocket of my jacket since the train from Lewes, and every few minutes I checked for them the way you touch a sore tooth. Ruth's grandmother had come up from Penzance with a tin of shortbread and a firm rule that nobody under sixty sat near the bar. My father had told me swallows bring luck to people who are leaving or coming home, and I had never worked out which of those we were doing that afternoon.
When the vicar held out his hand, my pocket was empty. The lining had torn on the platform at Lewes, and I had not noticed. I stood there, sure I would be remembered as the man who lost the wedding, until Mo unwrapped the cake box at her elbow and found two gold bands tucked in the paper beside the top tier, where she had put them for safekeeping and forgotten to say so.
Dennis still says Mo planned it all along. I say the swallows had seen the whole thing from the rafters and knew the way home better than any of us. Every spring since, I look up when the first pair comes low over the canal, and I count them, one for each person who stood in that tent and didn't let me drop anything.
