Mandala and lotus design on the top of a foot
Other · Black and grey · Photo
A bare foot rests on stones, with a symmetrical mandala design across the top running from the toes towards the ankle. The design combines a central lotus-like motif, scrollwork, fine dotted lines and pointed petal shapes drawn in dark, uniform ink. The image is in muted natural light, with the foot filling most of the frame and leaf litter and sticks in the background.

The rain came off the fens the morning Mother Ostrander decided I was ready, and the caravan smelled of clove oil and wet canvas. I had spent two seasons holding her tins and wiping her brushes, and I had come to believe the paste was the only thing on the common that moved slower than she did. A lotus, she said, cannot be hurried. The henna takes a night to darken, and the lines must be laid while the hand is still warm from the kettle.

She kept her designs in a cracked ledger she had carried since Blackpool, every page drawn with a compass and a pin. She taught me the order. The centre first, the bloom opening from it like a held breath. Then the scrollwork, running out in curls that looked accidental and were not. The dots came last. 'Never rush the dots,' she said, tapping the page with a nail gone black at the tip. 'They're the only part anyone counts, whether they know it or not.'
When her knuckles went stiff that November, she handed me the ledger and the good brass cone and sat by the stove telling me which pages were lies. I worked at the back of the stalls for a shilling a design, and the farmers' daughters came in pairs to laugh at the petals and stayed on to watch the dots go down.
The last night at Sudbury I took a flat grey stone from the stream, pressed a lotus onto it with a fine brush, and left it drying on the bank among the sticks and fallen leaves. By morning the ink had gone dark and sure, the way she had promised it would. I didn't wait to see whether the rain would take it. I knew which part would stay.
