A stylised creature head with a feathered, flame-like crest sits at the top of a long body made of swirling, scrolling shapes. The shapes are filled with purple, pink and orange tones and outlined in bold black linework, with dotted accents along the edges. The body ends in a curled tail with a small pointed leaf-like motif, set against a plain white background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Marren had been told not to light the lamp until the tide turned, but the creature in the cove had been singing since dusk, and the gulls had gone quiet in a way Marren did not like. She climbed down the wet steps of Skerry Point with a tin of paraffin under one arm and the matches wrapped in oilcloth.

The creature rose out of the shallows like smoke that had decided to be an animal. Its head had a crest that burned orange at the tips and purple at the roots, and its body unspooled behind it in curls and scrolls, each one edged with a line of dark dots the way foam edges a rock. Its tail ended in a leaf of pale light, curled tight as a fern. It did not look at her. It looked out past the reef, where a boat with no lamp was drifting towards the rocks.

Her grandmother had told her the creature was a fire the sea had taken in payment for a drowned sailor's last wish, and that it could only be called back by light given freely. Marren struck the first match, cupped it, and waited. The flame bent sideways, leaned, and went out. She tried again with her coat between the wind and her palms. Still the thing waited, patient as a cat, its scrolls turning slowly like pages.

On the fourth match she stopped trying to be brave and simply held it up, the way she held up her lamp for her father's boat each winter. The creature's crest flared. Its body rose in a long purple spiral and wrapped the drifting boat, turning it gently back from the teeth of the reef. In the morning the boat was tied at the slipway, and on the wet stone beside the steps lay a single pale feather of fire, cold as a dropped coin, which Marren kept in her tin with the spare matches.
