Floral henna design on the back of a hand
Botanical · Hand · Black and grey · Photo
A close photograph of a hand with intricate dark brown henna, also called mehndi, applied to the back of the hand, wrist and fingers. The design uses rows of flower rosettes, leafy vines, a banded wrist pattern and lines of dots, all drawn in fine detailed lines and solid fills. The hand rests on a cream textured rug with a phone visible at the top, and the dark design stands out clearly against the pale skin.

Ilse,

The pump crew finished the wrist band this morning, the one you asked about on the comms. Nobody on Carrow Basin has ever drawn a thing that did not have a use, so I'll tell you the truth: every rosette on that ring is a valve housing, and the vines running off it are the feed lines we rebuilt after the November pressure failure. Your grandfather used to say we were only ever gardeners with better tools.
The dots are the hard part. Each one is a seed bay, and I counted them twice before I let the printers run the pattern. There are forty-one on the long finger-line alone, which means forty-one bays that need checking before the wet season cycle. Ruta insisted the old pattern book was wrong about the spacing, so we went up the shaft with a torch and a tape, and she was right, which I will never tell her to her face.
I've sent the drawing down to the lower tiers with a note that says the design is finished and the feed is open. Come home for the harvest, Ilse. Bring your gloves. The last rosette on the palm is still unlinked, and I've left a gap for you to close it, the way my own mother left one for me.
