Symmetrical cherry blossom branches

Botanical · Mixed · Flash

The design shows two mirrored branches curving outward from a central point, each carrying pink five-petalled blossoms, buds and small falling petals. Dark navy linework outlines the branches and swirls, with soft pink shading inside the flower petals. The composition is wide and horizontal, centred on a plain white background with no body part visible.

The second crate of saplings came over on the Tuesday boat, and Pardoe swore at it all the way up the landing steps. Grafted stock, the invoice said, cut from a tree in a walled garden in Penzance. Nothing on Gull Ness had ever flowered. The salt wind saw to that, and so did the rock, which gives back nothing it is not made to keep.

I planted them myself, one either side of the gravel path that runs from the cottage door to the foot of the tower. Pardoe said a branch would snap in the first December gale. I told him then we would have firewood with manners. I bent the young wood down with twine and tied it to the railings, so the two trees leaned toward each other like neighbours trying to hear a conversation through a wall.

They took three winters to remember what they were for. Then in April, with the wind blowing hard from the west, the whole rock went pink for a week. Petals came off in handfuls and skidded across the yard, and some got past the wall and out over the water, where the gulls chased them and gave up. I stood on the gallery at dusk and counted them until the lamp came on behind me and the first sweep threw its beam across the sea.

The logbook lies open on the table now. Pardoe went ashore in the autumn and I have not seen him since. This morning a petal came in under the door and settled on the page, paler than the ink, and I have left it there. I write the weather beside it and the hour the lamp was lit.
