Pink floral botanical design sketch
Botanical · Mixed · Flash
A symmetrical floral design drawn on a plain white background, with two mirrored clusters of pink blossoms, green and gold leaves, and small buds on delicate brown stems. The linework is fine and sketchy, with soft watercolour-style shading in pink, green and ochre. The composition splits into two halves that sit either side of a central bare-stem arch.

Your letter came on Tuesday, the one with the Dorset postmark and the pressed mallow in the fold. You wrote that you have stopped painting the hedgerows because every flower looks like the one you had in your buttonhole at the wedding. I laughed out loud at that, alone in the kitchen, because it is the most honest thing you have ever said to me. Pink and gold and the green of a bruised stem, the same colours that were all over the church. I still have the photograph of you on the steps, squinting.
So I am sending you the seeds. Blush the Vicar put in the tin with Dad's handwriting on the lid, and the little brown sorts that smell of pepper. Plant them under the arch where the old trellis stood, the bare one that you said looked like a door nobody had bothered to paint. Let them climb. By August you will have more blossom than you know what to do with, and you will stop needing to paint the church.
