Symmetrical lace-style rose and chain design

Botanical · Black and grey · Flash

A symmetrical design of lace-like roses, rosettes, leaves and sprigs forms a central motif at the top, with multiple fine chains and dotted strands hanging below. The linework is cream on a dark charcoal background, with dense hatching inside the roses and small dots scattered around the edges. The composition is tall and centred, with mirrored halves that give it a balanced, ornamental look.

Your grandmother's bobbins clatter against the table before you have even set the kettle on, and the wind off the Atlantic pushes grit under the cottage door the way it always does in March. Out on the headland the boats are already coming in low and grey, and you can count them from the window without trying. Four. Then, after a while, three.

The lace is for the Mackay wedding, a veil that has to fall past the knees of a girl who has never once worn anything without pockets. Your grandmother pins the pattern to the cushion and talks you through the roses first, because the roses hold everything else together. Each one is a spiral of pinholes and thread, a rosette stacked on a rosette, and then the sprigs of leaves that climb up from the centre as if they are trying to reach a boat. Below them come the chains: single threads of pearled cotton looped and dropped, so the whole veil seems to be dripping.

She dies in the first week of April, before the veil is finished. You finish it yourself, working through the nights with the lamp pulled close, and when you reach the bottom edge you tie off the last chain and find that you have made one loop longer than the pattern asks for. You leave it. Nobody will see it but you, hanging there at the hem like a line let out to the water, and you think she would have scolded you for it and then done exactly the same.
