Symmetrical floral design with roses and hanging chains
Botanical · Black and grey · Flash
A symmetrical floral design built from roses, leaves and sprigs that fan out from a central crown. Fine cream linework forms the petals and foliage, with dotted beads and long chains hanging in loops below. The design is shown flat on a dark grey-green background with no body part visible.

The bells had stopped by the time I finished the second hem, which is how I knew the queen was dead. Mother taught me to count stitches under my breath so my hands would not shake, and I counted now: eleven roses on the left of the crown, eleven on the right, bay sprigs between them like a held breath. Nobody in the palace of Ysolde asks a lacemaker's girl to work mourning lace, but the steward had come down to the back rooms at dawn and asked for me by name.

The crown came up from the treasury in a box lined with grey silk. Cream thread, fine as breath, stacked roses like the petals of a cabbage, leaves unfurling from a central crown, and from the edges hung seed-pearl chains that looped past the hips. Half of it had been cut, not unpicked. The ends frayed like hair.
"Make it whole by noon," the steward said. I asked whose knife had done this, and he looked at the door before answering. The queen had made it herself one winter when the river froze and the court had nothing to do but sew. Her sister had been the better needlewoman. I did not ask where the sister was now. I had seen the grey barges slide out past the sluice gates in autumn, low in the water, and I had learned that a palace keeps its lace and forgets its lacemakers.
I worked until the light went. Each severed thread I tied to the next with the reef knot my mother used, and where a rose was lost entirely I drew a new one from memory, petal by petal. At midnight I stitched my own initial under the band, small enough to pass for a shadow. At noon the crown would go on a dead woman's pillow, the chains falling across her face like rain down a window, and the only mark of me would be the one nobody was meant to find.
