Tabby cat and red flower on the neck

Traditional · Neck · Colour · Photo

A tabby cat's head with yellow eyes and grey, orange and brown striped fur is shown in detailed shading, with whiskers drawn in fine lines. Below it sits a red flower with an orange outline, a black centre and white dots, flanked by green leaves and small red berries. The bold colours sit on a soft background of skin, and the composition is centred on the cat with the flower beneath.

The guard has held our passports for twenty minutes now, and Biscuit has not stopped staring at him with those yellow eyes, as if he owes her money. I am writing this on my knee while the coach idles beside the Kessel bridge, so forgive the wobble. Your grandmother would have laughed at the state of me.

The trouble is the geranium. It is wrapped in yesterday's newspaper on my lap, the last cutting from her windowsill, and the man in the glass box has asked three times what is inside. I told him a plant and a cat, which is true, though he did not find it funny. He turned the pot slowly in his hands, pinched one of the green leaves between his fingers, and said that leaves are leaves and rules are rules.

Then Biscuit stood up in the basket, stretched until her spine made a little bow, and walked straight to the edge of the counter as if she had been invited. The guard leaned in. He said his mother had a tabby called Pepper who once ate a whole ham off a kitchen table in Brno. He laughed for the first time since we arrived, stamped our papers with a bang that made the coach driver look up, and waved the pot through without another word.

We are over the river now. The cat is asleep again with her chin on the basket rim, and the red flower is nodding on the seat beside me, a little squashed but alive. Write to me at the new flat, love, and tell me whether the fig tree survived the frost. I will tell you more when I have a steadier hand.
