Sugar skull cat with red roses
Neo-trad · Upper arm · Mixed · Photo
A grey cat with yellow eyes, red sugar skull face markings and a small red heart on its forehead sits above a cluster of red roses and green leaves. The cat's fur is shaded in soft greys with fine whisker lines, while the roses have layered petals and bold colour. Black star outlines and small dark leaf sprigs sit around the design on smooth skin.

Dear Marguerite, the big top came down in Hull on Tuesday and I have been sitting on the wagon step ever since, trying to decide what to do about the cat. You will remember Bramble. Grey as wet slate, with yellow eyes that could find a sixpence in a bale of straw. Old Teodor painted that sugar skull face on him the winter we lost the Leeds contract, and the paint never fully came off. It dried into the fur like a lace collar.

The rest of us have packed the paper roses Ada glued to the wheel, the bunting, the lot. Mr Pell from the council wants the field cleared by Friday. He was kind enough to say the cat could stay on, provided he did not end up on the lion's bill. Bramble would not stand for that. He sits on the cage roof each evening watching the lorries as if they owe him money, and he will not come down for tinned pilchards unless Ada whistles the old waltz.
Last night I went to the empty tent to fetch the drum. Teodor's coat was lying where he left it, folded over the ringside rail, and Bramble was curled on top of it with his red heart turned toward the lamp. He did not move when I came in. I stood there a long while, listening to the rain on the canvas that is no longer our canvas, and I thought he looked like he was keeping watch over something that had already gone.
I have left the wagon door open tonight. If he wants to come with us to Carlisle, he knows where the step is. If he does not, I hope someone in Hull feeds him better than we ever did.
Yours in sawdust, Lou
