Fawn and peony on the upper back
Fine line · Back · Mixed · Photo
A small grey fawn with spotted markings stands in the centre of the design, with a pink peony and two red flowers arranged around it on thin green stems. The linework is fine and delicate, with soft grey shading on the fawn and softly blended pink and red petals. The composition is compact and roughly circular, sitting in the middle of an area of plain skin.

The fawn came off the mainland on the last ebb of March, when the causeway was still under three feet of grey water and nobody expected anything to walk it. Agnes Pell found it nosing at the wall of the lamp house, its legs splayed on the wet slate, and she stood a long while with the bucket in her hand before she thought to put it down.

Her husband Tom had planted the peonies the autumn they came out to the rock, three roots bought off a carter from Wick, and every June they opened like fists of pink paper against the salt wind. He had said they would never survive the gale season. They had survived eleven. The fawn ate the red campions from the bed by the path, bent its neck to the thin green stems and pulled them through its teeth, and Agnes let it, because it was the first thing to come out to the island in a year that wanted nothing from her.
When the tide turned she walked it to the gap in the rocks where the ground rose firm. It stopped at the edge and looked back at the lamp, its pale spotted flank catching the last of the light, and then it went up the shingle as though lifted rather than walked. Agnes stood until the marram grass swallowed it.
In the morning she found small hoofprints pressed into the path, the campions bitten short, and one peony bloom open beside the lamp house that had been shut tight the night before. She cut it, set it in a jar on the sill, and left the lamp burning a little longer than she needed to.
