Cat face with green eyes on a thigh

Fine line · Thigh · Mixed · Photo

A cat's face is drawn in fine black linework with dotted outlines around the head and muzzle. The eyes are filled with green and a small pink nose sits above the mouth, with whiskers extending to each side. The soft colour contrasts with the thin black lines against pale skin, and the design is centred on the thigh.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The lodgers at Mrs Pargeter's have been warned about the stairs, the damp in room four and the gull that tries the kitchen window every morning at six, but nobody warned you about the cat. She is already sitting on the fourth step when you come down with your case in hand, watching you the way a magistrate watches a man who swears he was at home all evening. Her eyes are the green of sea glass held up to a window, and she does not blink when you say good morning.

Mrs Pargeter says her name is Dolly and that Dolly came with the house, like the brass bell and the stain shaped like Ireland above the piano. Dolly belongs to nobody. She sleeps in the airing cupboard, walks the wet sand at low tide with the fishermen's boys, and once, in February, nosed open the hall table drawer and left the rent money from the Thursday before the storm. You suspect she has opinions about the other guests. You suspect she has opinions about you.

On your last evening the wind gets up off the Channel and the parlour lamps flicker. You find Dolly on the windowsill with her whiskers pressed flat against the glass, staring at the black water where a single light is moving slowly towards the harbour wall. Nobody else has noticed. Mrs Pargeter is dozing in her chair with the wireless murmuring. You sit down beside the cat and wait, the way she waits, until the light reaches the wall and goes out.

In the morning the trunk is strapped, the bill is paid, and Dolly is gone from the step. Mrs Pargeter shrugs and says she always disappears when a boat is due in. You take the train inland with the window open, and only at the first junction do you find a pale hair caught on your sleeve and think that she must have chosen you.
