Black fine line script reading take care with a heart shaped swirl between the words, tattooed on a forearm.

Take care script with heart on forearm

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A close photograph of a forearm bearing the words take care in black cursive script, with a single thin heart shaped line sitting where the o would be. The linework is clean and even with no shading, and the ink is solid black on pale skin. The tattoo fills the centre of the frame against a blurred light background.

Dear Tom,

The gulls have got into the bins again, and Mrs Pargeter has taken to leaving her kettle on the wall for them as though they were lodgers. I tell you this so you know the harbour is carrying on without you, which is more than I can say for the chip shop, which closed on Tuesday for reasons nobody will explain.

Your mother's letter came Thursday. She has written down every recipe she knows for the one thing you ever asked her to make, and underlined the bit about the lard twice, so I expect you'll be wanting to try it. Don't. Keep to the tinned soup the Navy gave you.

I went down to the slip this morning before the tide turned and sat on the wet stones where you used to carve your initials. There was a gap in the wall where the old lamp hung, and a bit of tarred rope tied round the post with a knot I didn't recognise. I think it's a message, though I can't read it. I've decided it says you'll be home by the spring tide.

The thing I keep meaning to say is the thing I always say at the end, which you'll have noticed I write differently now that the ink's gone thin. Where the o used to be I've drawn the little heart the way you showed me on the back of the ferry ticket. So read it as I mean it. Take care, love, and come back up the hill when you can.
