Colour tattoo of a blue TARDIS police box flanked by red roses, with a quotation around it, on a leg.

TARDIS and roses on a calf

Calf · Colour · Photo

A blue police box, the TARDIS, stands at the centre of the design with its doors and windows outlined, and a red rose sits on each side. A swirling blue and purple background frames the box, with a quotation in black lettering curving around the top and bottom of the circle. The shading is soft and smooth, and the colours are bright against the skin.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Sit down, sit down, and put your back to the wind, because this is a story that takes its time over the climb. You'll have seen the blue box on the Harrow Pass, the one with the lamp on its roof that nobody ever lit. My grandmother said it came up the valley the winter the bridge at Cawdle fell, and that it stood where the road bends, and that its door opened on a room bigger than the chapel. Then the snow came, and the box was there, and a tall thin man in a coat the colour of wet slate was sitting on its step eating an apple.

His name was Oswin Tallow, or so he said, and he had a way of talking that made the whole village lean in. He told the children he had seen the sea freeze solid in a single night and the stars come down to drink from it. He told the miller's wife that her dead husband was well and sent his love from a valley with no winter at all. Most of it was nonsense, and everybody came back the next evening for more. Each time he left, he left a red rose on the step, though no rose had grown on that mountain in living memory.

Ines Corrigan, who kept the goats and had no patience for tales, was the one who finally asked him where he was going. He looked at the roses in her arms, then at the sky, and said he went on, always on, because the far places were the only ones worth the trouble of reaching. She told him he was a fool. He agreed. In the spring the box was gone and the step was bare, except for one rose, still red, still warm when Ines touched it with her bare hand.
