Matching Snoopy and Woodstock wrist tattoos
Forearm · Mixed · Photo
Two wrists are shown side by side with palms facing up, each bearing a cartoon tattoo of a character with a red heart. The left tattoo shows Woodstock, a small yellow bird, holding a heart above his head, and the right shows Snoopy, a beagle, holding a heart in front of his face. The clean black outlines are filled with small areas of red for the hearts, with the rest of the skin left unshaded, and the two designs mirror each other as a matching pair.

The vending machine on Ward Seven had swallowed Dilys's pound again, so she sat on the linen trolley and waited for Marnie to come back from the sluice with the good biscuits. After two o'clock the surgical side went soft and slow. Only the drip stands hummed, and someone in bay C snored like a ferry pulling out of Holyhead.

Marnie returned with a packet of custard creams and a biro, and she drew on the back of a blood sugar chart while Dilys watched over the top of her tea. First a small yellow bird with one curl of hair, sitting back on his heels. Then a beagle with one ear flopped over his eye, leaning in to offer a heart. "Mirror them," Marnie said, pushing the chart across. "Then they're holding hands without having to touch." Dilys had never been one for drawing, but she copied the bird, and he came out looking as if he knew a secret about the hospital that nobody had told her.
The heart on the chart smudged when a porter knocked over the sugar. Marnie tutted, licked her thumb and tried to fix it, only making it worse. "Doesn't matter," Dilys said. "We'll redraw it at the end of the run." At six, when the day staff began to arrive with their coats and their loud voices, they sat side by side on the trolley and held their wrists up under the strip light, palms open, the bird and the dog facing each other across a finger's width of skin. Somewhere down the corridor a bleep went off, and neither of them moved until it stopped.
