A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Dear Uncle Aldric, the shark came back to the Kelp Terraces on the night of the spring tide, and I am writing because I promised you I would tell you everything, even the parts the court would rather I left out. It did not go for the nets. It hung below the Pearl Stair with its jaws open, grey as a storm in the deep, and it looked up at my sister Marisol, who had gone down to fetch the lantern cord.

Marisol is nine and has never once been afraid of anything that could not be bargained with. She swam straight down to it. I watched from the sill of the watch tower with my heart in my teeth. She stopped a fin's length short of those teeth, tilted her head the way Mother does when someone is lying to her, and said something I could not hear. The shark turned, slow as a tide, and went back into the blue.

The fishermen want it hunted. The Admiral wants the reef sealed. I want to know what she said. When I asked Marisol, she only laughed and said any creature with a mouth that size has a great many things it would like to tell somebody, and nobody ever listens to the teeth.

Keep the lanterns lit on the upper steps, and do not let the Admiral send the spear boats until I return. The water is clear again and the shark has not come back. I think it is waiting to see whether we will.

Your loving niece, Ysolde.
