Tattooed arm holding two hairless cats

Forearm · Mixed · Photo

Two hairless Sphynx cats are held close together, one resting against the shoulder of a person and the other cradled by a tattooed forearm and hand. The tattoos on the arm are mostly shaded in black and grey with some detailing, and a coloured tattoo is visible on the leg at the left edge. The composition is a casual indoor shot in a car interior with soft natural light and the person's face out of frame.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The estate car had been parked in the lay-by outside Ledbury since noon, and the two hairless cats had decided it was theirs. Marrow, the older one, sat on the dashboard like a bald magistrate, his grey-pink skin wrinkling whenever a lorry thundered past. Pemberton, younger and altogether more trouble, had already unzipped the glovebox and was building a nest out of a road atlas and a packet of mints.

Nobody in the car had asked for a cat. Nell had inherited the pair from her late uncle's flat in Hackney, along with a tin of sardines, a rusted lawnmower and a grudge against the council. She was driving them to a vet in Hereford who would only take animals in person, so she settled them on a folded blanket in the back and told them the sea was somewhere up ahead.

They did not care about the sea. They cared about the sausage roll on the passenger seat, which Marrow regarded with the cold patience of a man who had outlived three landlords. When Nell reached across for it, he stepped onto her wrist, pressed his warm, wrinkled brow against her knuckles, and would not move until she laughed.

By the time the hedgerows gave way to bramble and the sun dropped behind the Malverns, the glovebox held a single mint, the atlas was chewed at the corner of Cornwall, and Nell had stopped pretending she was going anywhere important. She pulled into the next layby, opened both back doors, and let the cats choose the route.
