Tattooed back and legs on a longboard

Back · Black and grey · Photo

A woman in a cap and a black bikini rides a longboard away from the camera along a narrow paved road. Dark tattoos cover her back, both upper arms and forearms, and several designs are visible on her thighs and calves. The photo is taken at a low angle in soft morning light, with green rice fields and trees on the right.

Every morning before the sun cleared the coconut palms, Made Suarta lifted the sluice gate at the end of the dyke road and let the water spill down into the terraces. He had done it for forty years, and he knew the sound each paddy made as it filled, a low drink like a cow at a trough. The road ran straight between the channels, and nobody walked it before the water came, because the wet mud kept footprints and told on everyone.

One dry-season dawn a stranger came up the road on a pale plank of wood with small wheels underneath, rolling without hands and without fuss. Suarta watched from the gate with his bucket on his hip. The rider never looked at the fields or at him. Her eyes stayed on the mountain, which was turning pink at its shoulders, and the rice leaned out to either side as if someone had asked it to make room.

He had painted a white skull on the gate that spring, to frighten off the herons that stood in his channels like bored clerks. The stranger slowed, looked at it for a long moment, and laughed the way people laugh at a joke they did not expect to hear in a field. Then she rolled on, and was gone past the last palm.

The next morning the water came up a finger higher than usual. On the gate, someone had painted a small black cap above the skull, and beside it a single wheel, neat and round. Suarta left it there. The herons kept away from that gate for the rest of the season.
